Dr. Michelle Newton
Medical Director
Michelle joined Stamford Veterinary Center as a full-time Veterinarian in December 2016. Although she will be dedicated to comprehensive all-around patient care and preventative medicine, her special interests include soft tissue surgery, dermatology and preventive care.
Doctor Newton attended Villanova University and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in Biology in 2011. She then attended the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University from where she earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2015. Doctor Newton is licensed to practice in Connecticut and New York, and she is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Association.
Doctor Newton enjoys ‘being a detective and helping those that don’t have a voice of their own,’ she says. ‘I like seeing the joy on a client’s face when I’m able to help their pet.’ Michelle’s passion for animals is unwavering. During her career, she helped treat a herd of 34 Angora cats that were part of a hoarding situation from a farm in Long Island, New York. She worked alongside ASPCA officials to triage, spay/neuter and treat the cats in an effort to make them adoptable.
Doctor Newton grew up in Rye, New York. She reflects on her childhood experiences with pets: ‘Growing up, I was never allowed to have a cat or dog, so I took the opportunity to try to own as many different small pocket pets as possible- from hermit crabs and guinea pigs to ant farms.’ Along with her love of animals, Michelle also harbored a deep interest in science and medicine. In fact during high school, she was torn between pursuing a career in veterinary medicine and pediatrics until she interned for a local veterinarian during senior year.
‘That sealed the deal,’ she jokes. Before becoming a veterinarian, Michelle volunteered at New Rochelle Humane Society and at the Miller and Clark Animal Hospital in Mamaroneck, New York. She also attended veterinary camp at the University of Pennsylvania and at Tufts. No longer limited to pocket pets, Doctor Newton has two cats of her own: brothers named ‘T.J.’ (Thomas Jefferson) who is an orange tabby, and ‘Teddy’ (Theodore Roosevelt) who is a brown tabby. When she’s not working, Michelle enjoys cooking (especially baking), photography and playing softball. She is also an avid fan of New York sports teams, especially the Yankees and Giants, as well as the Villanova Wildcats basketball team.
Dr. Katherine Shores
Veterinarian
Dr. Katherine Shores first discovered her love for veterinary medicine while volunteering at local animal shelters and working as a veterinary technician. She then went on to earn her DVM from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine and graduated in 2018.
